Summary
World Liberty Financial (WLFI) is a decentralized-finance project linked to Donald Trump and his family. In September 2025, after its WLFI governance token became tradable, the project blacklisted an Ethereum address belonging to major investor Justin Sun (founder of Tron), impeding him from transferring tokens. [1][2]
The freeze
Blockchain data showed WLFI froze roughly 540–595 million of Sun's unlocked tokens (about $107 million at the time) plus around 2.4 billion locked tokens. WLFI said the action followed suspicious outbound transfers — including about $9 million (~60 million tokens) sent to exchanges — which it characterized as a potential breach of his investor agreement. Sun said the transfers were small "deposit tests" with no buying or selling and no market impact. [1][2]
The lawsuit
Sun later sued WLFI in U.S. federal court in California, alleging breach of contract, fraud, and conversion, and that WLFI embedded an undisclosed, admin-controlled blacklist "backdoor" in its smart contract — which he described as "a trap door marketed as an open door" — contradicting its decentralization marketing. WLFI denied the allegations, accused Sun of misconduct, and threatened/filed a countersuit. The dispute remained ongoing. [3][4]
